LEARNTEC - Europe's largest event for digital education - held a second edition of its free online event LEARNTEC xChange from 22 to 24 June 2021 as an additional community platform for the trade fair that did not take place this year due to the pandemic. More than 7,600 participants informed themselves virtually about the trends in digital learning and working in almost 250 lectures and discussion forums in six parallel livestreams. Around 340 experts from the digital education sector spoke via video conference or live studio broadcast. In addition to hot topics from corporate learning, such as the development of future skills, learning with artificial intelligence (AI) or home office technologies, best practice examples from digital teaching were presented in the university section. A livestream was dedicated entirely to the digital transformation of schools. This year's Media Competence Day of the Stadtmedienzentrum Karlsruhe also took place here in a virtual setting on the third day of the event.

"The positive response and such lively participation in our online event LEARNTEC xChange has once again highlighted the great importance digital education has in our society. We are delighted that our diverse digital offering was so well received by the community and would like to thank all participants, speakers, participating companies and partners for filling our online platform with innovative ideas and life over the last three days," says René Naumann, Project Manager of LEARNTEC.

Industry experts met a professional audience eager for discussion

In more than 250 expert lectures and discussion forums, participants were able to learn about current education topics from around 340 speakers. Keynote speaker Edip Saliba, Head of Skilling for Business Customers at Microsoft Germany, received particularly high interest with his presentation on Learning Culture on the first day of the event. But the English-language lecture by Live Online Learning Specialist Jo Cook on the topic of Digital Body Language was also appreciated by the participants. Dr. Anita Stangl, 2nd Chairperson of the Bündnis für Bildung and speaker on the first day of the event summed up: "It was a highly concentrated, very successful event with highly competent discussion partners and a very informed and open-minded audience. Of course, a face-to-face event is nicer, but with this LEARNTEC the possibilities of hybrid and online events were shown. That makes me want to do more."

Exhibitors presented latest products and educational solutions

More than 250 participating companies provided information about their products and services in their exhibitor profiles and made contact with interested customers via the platform. The participants were also able to get to grips with the digital education solutions and topics even more intensively in 160 exhibitor presentations. Exchange and networking with the companies was also offered by the 90 virtual roundtables. Here, the audience could network with each other in small groups of maximum 45 participants.

Isabelle Ulbrich, Head of Marketing & Communication at Swissteach AG, draws a positive conclusion: "As an exhibitor from the very beginning, we are at LEARNTEC every year. I think LEARNTEC xChange is a different, but still great alternative for everyone involved! With detailed participant lists and chat functions, it's easy to get into conversation with people. Since you have the opportunity to find out in advance about the interests of the other person, the conversations are - in my view - sometimes even more efficient and sustainable than usual. A great experience for us, even though we are already looking forward to next year and the opportunity to present our latest products and LMS functions live again." Julia Nölker, Marketing Manager at Universum Verlag, is also satisfied with her appearance at the online event: "A future-oriented trade fair platform with high-quality presentations in a pleasant environment - we always enjoy being there."

Interaction and participation

The virtual event platform offered numerous opportunities for interaction and participation. During the presentations, the audience could ask questions to the speakers or participate in surveys. Many speakers used the "Get Together" function (small open video conferences on any topic) to engage in personal and open exchange with their audience after the presentation. Participants were also able to network with each other via chat, video call and matchmaking. "The get-together rounds were always very exciting and inspiring, and presentation content could be further deepened. The participants I had the chance to meet were very open to exchanging ideas and talking, so I was able to meet many new and exciting people and make contacts," says Lars Thiele, technical editor at Poly-clip System. "The diversity of the participants is a big plus of LEARNTEC or LEARNTEC xChange. People from different fields of work, industries and professions broaden their own horizons and many great ideas and concepts can be coupled and developed."

Next LEARNTEC in February 2022 in Karlsruhe

The next LEARNTEC will take place as a presence trade fair with accompanying congress from 1 to 3 February 2022 at Messe Karlsruhe. "The feedback from our exhibitors, visitors and speakers on our online event LEARNTEC xChange has been consistently positive. Nevertheless, it was made clear to us once again that we all miss the unique trade fair experience on site, which enables more personal exchange and intuitive discovery of ideas and solutions," says project manager René Naumann. "We are therefore already very much looking forward to opening our Karlsruhe exhibition halls again in February 2022 for the 29th LEARNTEC."
